'm going to tell you, it caught me by surprise. most people thought that hurricane sandy would have some sort of effect on these numbers and the labor department is telling us that sandy did not have an impact on these numbers. they looked across the country and in this region and the surveys were within normal range. they don't think it had an affect here. 12 million people unemployed. 40% of those have been unemployed for six months or longer. that's still a problem, don. to the right of your screen, 14.4% underemployment. some people call that the real unemployment rate. means a lot of people are still hurting or have been left out of the market. clearly you do have an improving situation here, improving but still leaving some people behind. this is what the trend looks like. this is the big drought of jobs, financial crisis here, slow attempt to get out of the hole. we want to see 150,000 jobs created or so every month to keep up with the growth in the population of the united states, working age population. you can see the last three months a little bit of an advance each of those m

and this is "viewpoint." it has now been six days since the tragic shooting at sandy hook elementary school where 26 people were murdered children. funerals continued for the victims as today grace mcdonnell, benjamin wheeler allison wyatt, catherine hubbard and jesse lewis and teacher annemarie was laid to rest. the task force met for the first time today. at the top of the meeting, joe biden stressed the task force will look at all factors contributing to gun violence including mental health and cultural issues. a balanced approach the democrats see as a way to garner republican support for modest gun control. >> gun control in reasonable ways, yes but also mental illness, violence and those kinds of things, when i talk to my republican colleagues in the senate who are pro nra in the last few days, they express that over and over again. but even a balanced approach to curbing gun violence may not be enough to sway house republicans. >> vice president's recommendations come forward we'll certainly take them into consideration. b
in the growing debate over gun control in the aftermath of the sandy hook elementary school tragedy. the head of the nra, standing by his comments about preventing similar mass curse. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. i will tell you what the american people, i think the american people think it is crazy not to do it. it is not going to make any kids safer. we have to get to the real problem, the real causes and that's what the nra is trying to do. there are so many different ways to evade that if you had that. you had that for 10 years when dianne feinstein passed the ban in '94. columbine occurred right in the middle of it. it didn't make any difference. i think that is phony piece of legislation and i do not believe it will pass for this reason. it is all built on lies that have been found out. heather: gun control advocates equally adamant about their position. here's democratic senator charles schumer. >> he was so extreme and so tone deaf, not even saying that guns had any part of the problem. that h

. >> the president is asking congress for more than $60 billion to help with sandy recovery efforts. he made the request friday on behalf of the state's hardest hit by the october storm. in a joint statement the new york governor and new jersey governor said the money would hen the states rebuild as well as help protect them from future storms. >>> the president of the philippines declared a state of emergency after visiting some of the hardest hit areas by the typhoon. helicopter footage shows the damage. the storm wiped out entire villages of 600 people dead and another 600 still missing. officials say that rescue operations have suffered a set back mostly because the survivors are just to shocked to help. there is also concern of food and water. >> yesterday marked the anniversary of pearl harbor and many paused to remember that day. in hawaii there was a moment of silence followed by a fly over at the time when the bombing started. the surprise attack by the japanese killed 2400 people and was the start of the united states involvement in world war ii. >>> in alameda pearl harbor surviv
